APPLICATION OF MICROORGANISMS IN PIG FARM WASTEWATER TREATMENT

14/12/2021

Vietnam is a country with a predominantly agricultural sector, including pig and livestock farming. Pig farms are often developed by individual households, leading to a high ratio of animal husbandry practices. Consequently, untreated wastewater from pig farming places a significant burden on the environment. Nowadays, rural farming companies are equipping their farms with basic wastewater treatment systems to protect the environment.

1. WASTEWATER COMPONENTS:

- Pig farming wastewater is generated from: urine, bathing water, cleaning of barns, and washing of tools. The use of water for cleaning barns, troughs, and equipment results in wastewater containing a large amount of solid materials, such as feces, leftover feed, sand, and gravel.

It is evident that pig farms produce highly polluted wastewater:

  • Organic content: 60-80%, including protein, cellulose, fat, carbohydrates, and leftover feed. The remaining 20-40% is inorganic, such as sand, urea, and soil,..
  • Nitrogen and Phosphorus content: Total Nitrogen = 400-600 mg/L, Total Phosphorus = 40-60 mg/L. Due to the high nitrogen and phosphorus content in the feed, the wastewater and urine have high concentrations of N and P.
  • Pathogens: Farm wastewater contains various bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

2. WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY:

Aeration Tank:  It role is convert nitrate to nitrogen gasThe anaerobic system absorbs nutrients and converts nitrate into nitrogen gas. Combining the wastewater with the recycled flow enhances the denitrification process. The equations for conversion to Nare as follows:

- Step 1: Convert nitrate to nitrite:     6 + 2CH3OH → 6 + 2CO2 + 4H2O

Step 2: Convert nitrite to N2:     6 + 3CH3OH → 3N2 + 3CO2 + 3H2O + 6OH- + 3O2

Aerobic Tank: In this tank, the process of removing BOD, COD, and converting ammonia to nitrate continues.

  • Nitrification occurs here, where ammonia (NH3, NH4+ ) is converted to nitrite (NO2) and then to nitrate (NO3), performed by two groups of bacteria: Nitrosomonas và Nitrobacter:

* Nitrosomonas bacteria: convert Ammonia to Nitrite. This stage, called nitrite formation NO2-

NH4+ + 3/2 O2 → NO2- + H2O + 2H+ + energy

* Nitrobacter bacteria: convert Nitrite thành Nitrate. This stage, called nitrate formation NO3-

NO2- + ½ O2 →  NO3- + energy

The BOD in the wastewater is treated with the help of aerobic microorganisms. BOD removal efficiency can reach 85-90%.

Organic matter + Aerobic microorganisms + O2 → CO2 + H2O + New biomass

3. INTRODUCTION TO BIOCLEAN PRODUCTS:

Bioclean ACF Nitro Activator

Highlights:

Contains two specialized microbial strains for nitrification:

  • Nitrosomonas sp (convert Ammonia to Nitrite).
  • Nitrobacter sp (convert Nitrite to Nitrate).

Includes Bacillus Licheniformis, Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus Subtilis, and nitrifying bacteria Nitrobacter winogradskyi, Nitrosomonas europaea, with a concentration 10 times higher than the old formula.

Benefits:

- Reduces ammonia and total nitrogen output in wastewater treatment systems, enhances nitrification, and reduces total nitrogen levels.

- Reduces ammonia odor in the system.

Mitigates the effects of microbial death due to high nitrogen loads.

BIOCLEAN ACF32

Highlights:

Imported from the USA.

Modern liquid-form microbes.

Benefits:

- Applicable for treating all types of industrial wastewater: rubber, dyeing, food processing, brewing, soft drinks, cooking oil, etc.

- Reduces COD, BOD, and suspended solids (SS) levels.

- Decreases sludge volume and recalcitrant compounds.

Balances the microbial community in activated sludge. Reduces and controls system-wide odors.

- Supports the oxidation of nitrogen-containing compounds (nitrification).

ACF 32, ACF NA, when combined, are optimal solutions for enhancing the treatment of BOD, COD, TSS, high total nitrogen levels, improving water color, controlling odors, and treating cellulose in wastewater, ensuring that the discharged water meets the required standards.

Notes:

- Depending on the characteristics of each system, the dosage of BIOCLEAN should be adjusted accordingly.

It is recommended to add BIOCLEAN regularly, weekly or monthly, to prevent the microbial community in the tank from weakening.

Avoid situations where the microbes in the tank are too weak or the parameters are too high, as this will increase treatment time and costs for system recovery.
