REASONS WHY STARCH-CONTAINING WASTEWATER IS DIFFICULT TO TREAT
1. Characteristics of Starch Wastewater
- Starch wastewater is characterized by a high COD concentration, is difficult to degrade, and is not effectively treated. Sweet potato flour, tapioca flour, wheat flour, etc., are common raw materials in the food production and processing industry, and they also appear in some industries such as packaging and paper manufacturing,...
- Wastewater is mainly generated from peeling, washing, chopping, settling, etc.
- (*) Reasons why starch-containing wastewater is difficult to treat:
- Starch wastewater contains a lot of protein, cellulose, pectin, sugars, etc
- The BOD and COD levels in the wastewater are high (>3,000 mg/l).
- The TSS content ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 mg/l.
- Nitrogen and phosphorus are often at high pollution levels.
- High viscosity in wastewater will affect the microbial treatment process and filtration in the subsequent stages.
- The pH is usually low due to the long retention of starch wastewater in the equalization and settling tanks, which will affect the pH of the entire wastewater.
- Starch is often difficult to settle and coagulate; PAC and Polymer can be used for treatment.
- Additionally, cassava peel and core contain cyanide (CN-), a carcinogenic substance.
- If not treated, the starch content in wastewater will decompose and emit a sour odor, affecting the color quality of the water.
To effectively treat starch wastewater, it is necessary to understand the composition and characteristics of the wastewater, from which to properly address the problem without wasting time and costs.
2. Application of Microorganisms in Starch Wastewater Treatment
a) Treatment of BOD, COD, TSS, and Enhanced Anaerobic Decomposition
Hightlights:
- Operates under salinity conditions of <30‰ (3%).
- Reduces BOD, COD, TSS levels in wastewater.
- Quickly improves shock load situations when wastewater shows signs of salinity.
- Enhances the performance of wastewater treatment systems with high concentrations of fibers, sludge, and cellulose fibers.
- Treats turbidity in wastewater and improves water color.
Applications: Starch, paper, fruit and vegetable wastewater, seafood wastewater, fish sauce production, sanitation wastewater from slaughterhouses, livestock farms, canned vegetable production, tanning, etc
Highlights:
- Enhances anaerobic degradation efficiency for tanks.
- Improves BOD/COD removal efficiency.
- Increases efficiency for biogas tanks, septic tanks, anaerobic systems, etc.
- Reduces H2S and sludge formation.
- Optimizes the effective microbial community in anaerobic conditions.
- The improved microbial formula ranges from 108 to 1010
- Decomposes a wide range of complex organic compounds, including facultative anaerobic bacteria.
Applications: suitable for anaerobic technology, biogas tanks, septic tanks, composting.
b) Treatment of High Total Nitrogen, Ammonia
Highlights:
Contains two specialized microorganisms for nitrification:
- Nitrosomonas sp (convert Ammonia to Nitrite).
- Nitrobacter sp (continue convert Nitrite to Nitrate).
* Nitrosomonas bacteria: convert ammonia to nitrite. The nitrite formation stage is known as NO2-
NH4+ + 3/2 O2 → NO2- + H2O + 2H+ + energy
* Nitrobacter bacteria: convert nitrite to nitrate. The nitrate formation stage is known as NO3-
NO2- + ½ O2 → NO3- + energy
Effectiveness:
- Reduces ammonia and total nitrogen levels in the system, enhancing the nitrification process.
- Reduces ammonia odor in the system.
- Resolves microbial death due to shock load with high nitrogen content.
(*) ACF AD, ACF SC MARINE, ACF NA are used together for anaerobic, anoxic, and aerobic biological clusters, providing the most optimal and effective solution to promote BOD, COD, TSS treatment, high total nitrogen treatment, improve water color, control odor, and treat cellulose in wastewater, ensuring discharge meets wastewater standards.
