HOW IS SUPERMARKET WASTEWATER TREATED USING AO TECHNOLOGY?

A. SUPERMARKET WASTEWATER?

1. Composition of Wastewater:

- Supermarket wastewater contains a lot of easily biodegradable organic matter, as well as inorganic components, microorganisms, and pathogenic bacteria. Organic substances in domestic wastewater account for about 50–60% of the total substances, including animal and plant organic matter. However, the wastewater flow rate is determined by the number of employees, customers, food stalls, and the size of the supermarket.

We can see that:

- The levels of oil, grease, and total suspended solids (TSS) are quite high; we can use an oil and grease separator tank or flotation tank for treatment.

- For Coliform treatment: use sedimentation combined with disinfection.

- For BOD and COD treatment: aerobic tank.

- For N:P treatment: use an anoxic tank

 

2. Sources of Wastewater Generation

- Fresh food areas: Fresh fish, meat, seafood, etc., are cleaned by employees for packaging or processing.

- Cooked food processing areas: This area has many specialized sinks for employees to use. Wastewater from this area will contain a large amount of oil and grease, along with solid waste, etc.

- Wastewater from daily activities and hygiene practices of employees and customers in the supermarket..

B. WHAT IS AO TECHNOLOGY?

AO technology is an advanced technology currently used mainly for domestic wastewater treatment. It ensures the quality of treated wastewater, saves space and construction costs, and is more economical to operate.

Aerobic Tank: In this tank, BOD is removed, and ammonia is converted to nitrate.

The Nitrification process occurs here, where ammonia (NH3, NH4+ ) is converted into nitrite (NO2) and then into nitrate (NO3), performed by two groups of bacteria Nitrosomonas và Nitrobacter:

* Nitrosomonas bacteria: convert Ammonia to Nitrite. The nitritation stage forms NO2-

NH4+ + 3/2 O2 → NO2- + H2O + 2H+ + energy

* Vi khuẩn Nitrobacter: convert Nitrite thành Nitrate. The nitratation stage forms NO3-

NO2- + ½ O2 →  NO3- + energy

The BOD content in wastewater is treated with the participation of aerobic microorganisms. The BOD removal efficiency can reach 85-90%.

  • Organic matter + aerobic microorganism + O2 → CO2 + H2O + new biomass

Anoxic Tank: This tank is responsible for denitrifying nitrate into nitrogen. Anoxic microorganisms absorb nutrients and convert nitrate into free nitrogen. The combination of wastewater and the recirculation stream makes the denitrification process more effective. The conversion to Noccurs as follows:

Step 1: Convert nitrate to nitrite:     6 + 2CH3OH → 6 + 2CO2 + 4H2O

- Step 2: Convert nitrite to N2:     6 + 3CH3OH → 3N2 + 3CO2 + 3H2O + 6OH- + 3O2          

 

C. INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGICAL PRODUCTS
